2. Five ways to lay the same tile

Every pattern below is the same tile — only the orientation and offset change. The arrows show pile direction.

3. What each pattern hides or shows

The everyday choice comes down to two questions. Do you want the floor to read as a single quiet surface, or to make a statement? And how confident are you in the subfloor and the dye-lot consistency? Quarter-turn is the safe default precisely because it answers both conservatively.

4. Herringbone’s extra demands

Herringbone earns its own section because it is the pattern most likely to go wrong on site. Laid at an angle with tiles or planks meeting point-to-point, it magnifies every imperfection the straight grids forgive.

  • A flatter subfloor. Angled joints telegraph any dip or hump far more than a straight grid, so surface preparation has to be better.
  • Precise setting-out. The whole field is built from accurate guidelines; a small error at the start compounds across the room.
  • More cutting, more waste. The angled perimeter means many cut tiles and more offcuts — typically higher overage than a straight grid (on the order of 10–15% more, though it varies by room shape and tile size, so confirm the figure with the manufacturer).
  • Plank formats suit it best. Herringbone reads best in plank tiles (for example 25×100) rather than 50×50 squares.

5. Choosing your pattern

  1. Want an even, forgiving floor? Quarter-turn. It hides shading and dye-lot variation and wastes the least material.
  2. Want a broadloom, seamless look? Monolithic — but specify tight dye-lot control, because it shows any variation.
  3. Want linear direction or gentle wayfinding? Ashlar or brick, ideally in a plank format.
  4. Want a design statement? Herringbone — and budget for a flatter subfloor, careful setting-out and extra material.
  5. Always check the tile’s datasheet for its recommended method, and download the pattern files to plan the layout before ordering.
